I have the California map downloaded, but it's considerably slower than the online maps so I only plan to use it when I don't have a data connection.  It might be due to the size of California and/or my old phone (5s 16GB).

The rendering speed on a 5s is currently pretty slow for high zoom levels. We are working to fix the performance of offline maps for older and newer devices.

What's also really amazing is the level of customer support Nic gives to Cachly.  It's just great to see how he responds so quickly and then sometimes goes a step beyond.  One example is when a new user was confused about setting up an account.  Nic responded quickly with info about signing up at geocaching.com, but then he went a step further and made a pinned topic about it.

(I did do a cache run this weekend and didn't open my old standby app, Geosphere.  Cachly performed the job flawlessly).

We really want to put users first. With that as our #1 goal we can make the best Geocaching app possible and provide the best support. :)

The GeoSphere app (which I'm trying to stop using) logs things with the right date and time stamp, so it must be possible.  Perhaps it's some sort of double adjustment by the Cachly app and the API.

From what I understand about Geosphere is that it back dates the time that you logged it, based on your time zone. I have not yet concluded that this is the best way to do it, because if in fact geocaching.com does fix it on their end, all of those dates would end up being incorrect. I will look into this further today.

Thanks Nic. This "Live" distance sorting bug seems to be focused only on corrected coordinates. There is an offline list distance sorting issue that is far more consequential. The sorting by distance for offline caches seems random and the list changes with every refresh. I believe you already know about that one but just in case, I thought I'd mention it.

Yes, the sorting by distance issue has been fixed in 2.0.1, but thank you for pointing it out. :)

Can you also confirm that if it were working properly, the only thing that would happen is that the notes field in GSAK would be populated? That is one issue for me. The additional issue, or question for me is how would I import my found logs into GSAK in a way to change the "Found" status in GSAK. I guess I'm also looking for a way to convert those logs to a GPX file so that they could me imported into GSAK. Thanks so much for the quick replies.

This feature can be used to upload the .txt file to the Field Notes page on geocaching.com: https://www.geocaching.com/my/uploadfieldnotes.aspx

As for GSAK, I don't use it all that often. The feature was developed in conjunction with a GSAK beta tester of mine and did all the testing of this feature. You should be able to import that file and then publish those as finds using GSAK.

There isn't currently a way to convert these to a GPX file. :(

At the risk of maybe causing confusion, I'd like to use this thread to bring up another unrelated (I think) issue that I've noticed.  It is similar to something I'd noticed previously with 1.1.7, but hadn't got around to reporting before 2.0 was announced, but now that 2.0 is out and the bug is there, I guess I'd better mention it.  I was out caching today, looking for a cache I had previously DNFed.  Because of my previous DNF log, the map symbol was a blue frownie.  After successfully finding the cache, I logged my find and went back to the map expecting to see the symbol changed to a smiley.  But not only was it still a frownie, but nearly ALL of the smileys on the map were now displayed as frownies.  I tried refreshing the map, but it didn't change, and even if I panned the map to a completely different location and refreshed, most of the symbols that should be smileys were blue frownies.  The only way to restore the display to normal seemed to be to force quit the app and restart; after that everything was back to normal.

This is a bug that a few others have reported as well, but it is really hard to replicate, so I haven't been able to track it down.

Are you able to replicate it?

  7. We send the log dates to the geocaching.com API at UTC time. geocaching.com then seems to be doing some sort of conversion on that, although they have told me it shouldn't be.

Do you have your geocaching.com time zone settings correct?

I began to use Version 2 today and I happened to be working with a number of Mystery caches with corrected coordinates. I noticed, in "Live" view that while the caches with corrected coordinates appear properly on the map, they seem to be in the wrong order in List mode. The List display seems to use the posted coordinates to determine the cache's distance from your current position. So, you could be standing right next to a cache with corrected coordinates and it will display properly on the map but when clicking on the list, it is way down the list. Is this a bug or was this intended?

Are you only seeing this issue in List View? Or also on the cache details and Navigate To screens?

It isn't intended, so I will look into this issue on Monday.

Not a big concern for me and I live on the NJ/NY border. These are the caches around my home location and you can see there's no map segments displayed in the top right quadrant of the screen as that is the NY border. Switching is quick.

In your case you could also download the "US Northeast" map which includes multiple states including NY and NJ.

Would it be possible to show 2 different vector maps at the same time? This could be helpful, if you are caching alongside of the edge of a vector map.

No, this isn't currently possible and we are not planning it. It is a bit harder of a feature to add, and, it has the potential to take up too much memory.

What borders are you caching on?

That looks so much better, although presented slightly differently it has all the necessary detail. If that were available offline it would be so much more user friendly at those levels of zoom. Can't fault the customer support, thanks again for all your hard work.

Other things can always be adjusted, I have unlimited amount of control over it. :)

I'm guessing it's a trade off between having a large map but keeping the space required for it as low as possible therefore some detail is being lost? Hope it all makes sense.

The new maps render the tiles on the fly and do not rely on actual image files being preloaded on the device. I am working to speed up the rendering significantly.

Can you give me some coordinates of where on the footpaths are on earth? I want to be able to look at the same location that you are when I am updating our map styles.

when you do that, it zooms out.  So, if I get the map to look like I want (e.g. the cache I'm navigating to, within 500 ft, and I are in the map) and I want to switch to the mode where it points me in the right direction with the rotating map I can't do that.  Hitting the location button zooms back out and changes the mode.  once I get it back to rotating map, I have to zoom back in - and make sure not to pan at all or I have to do it all over again.  as far as usability, I only really noticed the issue when I was close to the cache.

I will look into this issue, as it shouldn't be doing this.

iPhone 6.  just used to geosphere where many 1000's are handled without an issue.  it wasn't even a gpx file, I just hit the live refresh until there were about ~1000 caches and tried to add to an existing list which had about 500.

This also shouldn't happen. Can you reproduce the issue? Also, can you let me know what your GC username is so I can look in our crash logs?

  14. The new maps are Open Street Maps. However, we use our own custom style sheet to style the map and display data on the zoom levels we specify (meaning, I can change the zoom level that footpaths and other data show on). So here are some questions:

    1. Can you give me coordinates of where the footpaths are so I can take a look?
    2. What zoom level do you wish footpaths showed up on?
    3. Does the slow rendering only happen at high zoom levels, or always?

I hope together we can fix these issues.

  15. Thanks for trying Cachly!

In the case where the map is rotating, it is odd that panning the map even a little changes the mode (it goes back to non-rotating). zooming doesn't seem to change this.

This functionality matches that of Apple and Google map apps. This was specifically done to give a intuitive and cross app experience since users likely have used one of those apps.

There doesn't seem to be a way to switch to "rotate the map to show my direction" and not, without also changing the zoom.

If you tap the current location button Screen Shot 2016-12-08 at 10.06.06 AM.png a few times it will toggle you through the different modes. One of which rotates the map as you rotate. Is that what you meant?

crash importing a semi-large (~1000) caches.  that was disappointing, but smaller lists seem to work.  Geosphere's handling of very large lists quickly and efficiently is a game changer for geocaching, and is mentioned by others.

What iPhone are you using? The import size depends on the amount of memory your phone has. As stated elsewhere we are working to fix this issue. Can you send me the GPX file?

parking coords for a cache only show up when you navigate to the cache itself, making it a little harder to find parking "in the area" if not all of the caches have that extra parking coord.

Would you prefer them to be on the main map with all the caches?

Please let me know if you have any other questions.
