Well, it never changed and actually switched back to miles completely: (Sorry, I know you’re so busy with the main app so no hurry) thanks for your time.

Should have done that to begin with huh #sillyme. that worked, looks like this now. meters still says miles but I’ll see if that switches over after I’ve used it for a while.

I've been using the watch since september, it's an Apple watch 4 and my phone is an iPhone 7. Hope that helps.

I'm sorry, I know this is someone elses post but my watch also shows miles and I've set the app to metric. Is there another way to change this? Mine doesn't swap over when I use it.
