  1. I don't know if there was a backup created before the migration. But what I have heard in the meantime is this: My friend's wife also switched from an iPhone7 to an iPhone13 at the same time. So identical constellation, only of course with its own iCloud account. For her, everything worked without any problems, as it should be.

In the meantime, we also did a test where my friend logged out of iCloud on the iPhone13 and then logged in again. Unfortunately, that didn't do anything either. Ditto with Cachly in the iCloud settings de- and re-enable.

Here are some more screenshot to show what Cachly displays. First a photo was attached to a Personal Note and then an attempt was made to display the photo.

On the first screenshot you see... nothing. No photo.
Screenshot 2 shows the content of the "Photos" folder with a lot of empty folder. In all these should be at least one image.
Screenshot 3 shows the next higher level, the Cachly folder. Also there 0 objects in the photos.
I assume that the info for these 3 levels is stored somewhere in the Cachly DB, because in iCloud Drive these folders do not exist.

    1.thumb.jpg.993d6d5723b5cdd3187620317a175bc3.jpg2.thumb.jpg.13919212df65c69a46cf3d5f9ee98362.jpg3.thumb.jpg.8e133187fc40b29b44c6c7473f8bbbb7.jpg

Now it gets interesting. If you try to go one level higher from screenshot 3 (into the iCloud Drive folder), you only get two error messages. From here you can only quit Cachly completely. Which plugin is dead...?

If you tap on „ Durchsuchen“ (Browse) in the lower right corner of screenshot 1-3, the correct content of iCloud Drive is displayed. Here you can also see that the Cachly folder does not exist.

    6.thumb.jpg.a807ac903a802e711a839060588a7f12.jpg

I would now be interested in how to get Cachly to forget the (presumably) internally stored information about the non-existent folders and start over. Is it possible to delete/reset something in the Cachly settings? Or does my friend have to completely delete the Cachly app from the iPhone and reload it from the App Store?  In that case I guess all other user settings would be lost as well....

The loss of all spoiler images is of course very annoying, but a way must be found to use Cachly again in a normal way.

  2. Hello Nic

We double checked all the settings again (both on iPhone7, and on iPhone13). The situation is as follows:

Did you turn off iCloud and iCloud Drive on the iPhone 7?

iCloud, iCloud Drive and Cachly are enabled on both iPhones (nothing was ever changed).

    (Sorry, only in german available...)

On 11/7/2021 at 10:21 PM, Nic Hubbard said:

Yes. Your photos will still be saved on iCloud, even if your new phone doesn't see them yet. Have you made sure to turn on iCloud and iCloud Drive, including making sure that Cachly's use of iCloud is turned on?

Is there another iCloud setting in the Cachly app? I have only found the above settings in iOS.

When I access my friend's iCloud via Safari, I only see these folders under iCloud Drive:

    130354275_Bildschirmfoto2021-11-09um16_15_07.thumb.png.3408faf41d7dfad65d4807ecf8ace4e2.png

But when I look at my own configuration in iCloud Drive, there is a "Cachly" folder with all photos in it. This folder is completely missing the case of my friend! It was also definitely not deleted manually. Then it would have to be in the "deleted items", which is not the case.

On 11/7/2021 at 10:21 PM, Nic Hubbard said:

You can verify that the files are still there by going to www.icloud.com and logging in, then going to iCloud Drive > Cachly > Photos. There you will see the GC codes of all the caches that have images, and the images are inside of the folders.

This is exactly not the case. No Cachly folder, no photos.

When transferring data from iPhone7 to the new iPhone, all Cachly settings (lists, markers, waypoints etc.) were transferred correctly. Only the pictures attached in the personal notes have disappeared since then… (on both iPhones)!

And as mentioned above, it is so that this function is also no longer possible. For example, if you attach a photo now on iPhone13 (in Personal Notes), you see that an image should be attached, but it can't be accessed. And in iCloud no Cachly folder appears either. For me, I can do the exact same thing on my iPhone and both the Photo shows up correctly and the Cachly+Photos folders are created on iCloud.

There definitely seems to be a problem here since the migration.

Btw: We always talk about the latest Cachly and iOS version.

  3. Hello

Another Cachly user just called me about a problem. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a solution, so I'm hoping for help here.

The user has regularly saved photos in the Personal Notes of the caches on his old iPhone 7. So far everything has always worked. Now he has a new iPhone 13 and all the iPhone data was migrated normally. When he wanted to look at a picture in Cachly on the new iPhone, it shows the number of pictures that are stored in the Personal Note, but the pictures themselves are not displayed. Also when searching in the iCloud Drive folder, none of them can be found.... (checked on the iPhone and via browser). I first thought that in that case the pictures on the iPhone 7 were only stored locally (although the iCloud settings appear quite normal).

Unfortunately, they are now suddenly not displayed on the iPhone 7 either. He then tried to reattach a photo in Personal Notes on the iPhone 7 to a different cache. Even that suddenly doesn't work anymore. The error message that appears says: "iCloud does not appear to be configured. Make sure iCloud for Cachly as well as iCloud Drive are enabled." (error message translated from German to English).

Somehow we are clueless right now what is going on. On the one hand, it's about the loss of many attached spoiler images, which disappeared somewhere (1. priority). And on the other hand, the function can not be used normally even on the new iPhone 13.

Does anyone have an idea where to look for these pictures (on the iPhone 7)? Or otherwise any idea what could be set wrong there in connection with iCloud Drive? As I said, in the iCloud settings, iCloud Drive is active normally, as it is on Cachly.

    Thanks!

  4. I have a problem with the search function:

If I search for a GC code in the live map via the search field, then it works perfectly. But if I search for a geocache name (or part of the name), then nothing works at all. On the opposite, a red waypoint is created somewhere. Am I doing something wrong?

In the offline lists, the search by name works as expected.

You are seeing parking lots that are missing? Which coordinates is that at?

Have a look at the pictures 4 and 5.
    4) N47 23.390 E8 23.260
    5) N47 23.470 E8 23.375

And to be honest: I can't see any parking lots at all. So I could name thousands of places. On the old free maps the parking lots are all marked with a blue "P". This sign is missing on the new maps. And please don't tell me that the grey area is supposed to be a parking lot (Fifty Shades of Grey or what...?). Such a pure colouring simply gets completely lost. I can't spot a parking garage like that either.

Here is another example between old and new maps:

    IMG_8292.thumb.JPG.3f1f2ca4378a5a42e490063c5aca92ba.JPGIMG_8291.thumb.JPG.f1e126850f947edfb4a06f7e5b0fd919.JPG

The waypoint shows a parking garage of the shopping mall (N47 23.214 E8 29.850) while the grey area across the street is a normal building (N47 23.155 E8 29.813). On this section you can also see the three bus stops, which are not shown on the new maps.

Good to have both old and new maps available. In urban areas, the old maps are much superior, while in the forest and off-road the premium maps are more pleasant. Especially because of the elevation lines. But also here a last example:

    IMG_8293.thumb.JPG.5d8b640885e7232eee15ab17c7ee45ef.JPGIMG_8294.thumb.JPG.0dfd016671b3efa3b8c6584eaeb54e02.JPG

    Location: N47 20.200 E8 22.045
A quick look at the old map shows me that there is a forest house and a parking lot. On the premium map I have no idea what it should be exactly. The Freizeitkarte-osm.de would also show a fountain with drinking water at this site.

Please don't take this the wrong way. I like the premium maps because they are clear and show good elevation lines. They just aren't as premium as they could be on closer inspection.

  6. Coords (all in Switzerland):
    1) N47 22.500 E8 21.115
    2) N47 22.200 E8 21.625
    3) N47 23.300 E8 22.755
    4) N47 23.390 E8 23.260
    5) N47 23.470 E8 23.375

Sorry, this is the description vom Freizeitkarte-osm.de:

    Quote

Roads and paths with restricted access for motor traffic:
    - Delivery traffic allowed:Usage is permitted for delivery of goods to the customer only.
    - Destination traffic allowed:Usage is permitted if the destination is on this road or path.

In Switzerland, this means that only local residents or delivery services may drive on these roads. For all others there is a driving ban.

You are right: A lot of information are of course not absolutely necessary (e.g. freestanding trees). These are just examples of how much more detailed these maps are. On the other hand, this information can often be a useful source. There are not so many fireplaces or fountains etc. in the forest.
Much more important are of course the routing information. Are the roads passable or are there restrictions etc.? And of course parking lots or bus stops are also important information.

  7. Hi Nic

Here are the samples Cachly premium maps vs OSM based Freizeitkarte-osm.de maps. If needed I can also tell you the coords of this locations.

    1a.thumb.JPG.1dda8e97df35811d7cf19e9ebc561377.JPG1b.thumb.JPG.7c7232dad9c7c26440fde7f4e57bac69.JPG

A fountain (with drinking water) and a Picknick place are displayed.

The light purple color shows streets with driving ban.
The grey dotted line shows roads with restricted feeder service.
A children's playground is displayed in the lower left corner.

    3a.thumb.JPG.7d055e3ec3bf6179db3d7aa355621e3d.JPG3b.thumb.JPG.974364efa01428c7ae1aa6c0849c0c17.JPG

    Free-standing trees are displayed.
A bench seat is also visible.
    And again:
    roads with restricted feeder service.

The arrows show a one-way street (the very small arrows on the premium maps are nearly invisible).
There are also three parking lots, a church, a playground, a fountain and numerous inscriptions on public buildings.

    5a.thumb.JPG.46e524ca7288f2283b8a7f8f99147aba.JPG5b.thumb.JPG.e74fb0e45bed7689d49f15f083a8a206.JPG

Parking lots, a petrol station and other information are also displayed here.

Interestingly, the markings (parking spaces, public buildings, etc.) in urban areas are much better on the old standard maps than on the new premium maps.

On https://www.freizeitkarte-osm.de/android/en/index.html you can still find a lot of information about the maps (design / imprint).

The API doesn't include % data sadly. Do you know what the calculation is to figure out the %?

Yes, I just see in the API documentation that this value Favo-% does not exist. :(

The value is basically calculated like this:
Number of favorite points divided by number of premium member logs. Basic member logs do not count.

    12 hours ago, hidegoseek said:

I'm not sure that percentage is the best metric when planning a trip and looking for favorited caches.  I have a cache with 100% favorites, but there have only been 4 finders so far.  I think cachers would rather look for my cache that has 67 favorite points (but only 26%).

@hidegoseek I don't agree. I prefer a cache with 20 finds and 90% FP over one with 250 FP but 1000 finds. Especially in Germany there are a lot of caches with hundreds or thousands of FP, but in % there is often a low number. In addition: activating two filters: "> 100 FP" and "> 50% FP" or something similar would give you all the possibilties.

  9. The premium cards are already a big step forward in Cachly. But I can just support the idea of ferda-mravenec. The possibility to show/hide details or even change the style would be sensational!
My cache partner uses the Locus app on Android and when we are on the road she often has much better information on her (OSM) maps (e.g. display of fountains or fireplaces in the woods). Especially helpful is that she can see if a road is passable by car or if it is a one-way street!

  10. Hi Nic

Here a little input for a super improvement: Would it be possible to display the favorite points in percent? Especially if you are travelling in a unfamiliar area and don't want to miss the best caches, this would be a very useful function! Of course you should also be able to filter or sort by percentage.
If the % display is output via the API, I guess it would be relatively easy to implement such a function.

    Thanks!

  11. Here is the answer from the HQ:

    Quote

With the arrival of GDPR, we've had to implement some changes to protect the privacy of users. Therefore, API partner applications that have friend functionality were affected by this. We need to ensure that users being followed on partner applications are aware they are being followed. There needs to be a "request to follow" and accept action within the partner application above just being friends on Geocaching.com in order for us to allow that functionality. If that functionality exists, we could consider it with an API partnership.

I hope they will implement this "request to follow" option soon. Interestingly, the opposite option "Do not allow Authorized Developer applications to access my public profile information" already exists in the profile. So it's a bit confusingly solved, but at least there's hope that the friends list will come back sometime.

Nic, I'm sorry about the initial accusition against Cachly.

  12. To give a much more important example:

The website Cach.ly uses Google Analytics and Google Fonts. For me as a European customer, it is precisely this information that needs to be listed in the website's privacy information, because every time I access this website my data is transferred to Google without my knowledge of it. This is an absolutely essential part of a website and exactly because of such violations companies in Europe are being sued. But on Cach.ly I can find neither an imprint nor the information about the person who is responsible for data protection and also no other data protection regulations. This would be much more important than the friends list in the app and above all it is a 100% violation of the GDPR.

    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=gdpr+in+the+usa   ;)

  13. I know the possible fines regarding GDPR (I live and do business in Europe) but if so Groundspeak would be asked to pay first!! They store, control and make the data publicly available. They are the big player. But for Groundspeak it is obviously no problem to keep all this information public. So I don't understand why Cachly's blocking that information now. Cachly does not store any personal data! Only the public data of Groundspeak is displayed in the app. That's a big difference.

This is about the simplest log and statistical data, which were published under a pseudonym. It's not like publishing someone's medical records with a full name. Should we not simply use common sense?

By the way: The big fines are primarily directed against companies like Facebook, Google and other monster players. No small company has to expect a million-dollar lawsuit, and certainly not in the USA. No arm of Europeans has been that long. Moreover, it would never pay to seek an international trial for a small sum!

    Let's think a little further:
If you really cared about data protection, then all logs would have to be blocked for public access! Only the cacheowners are allowed to see them, because the logs are directed to them. Of course, the statistics should no longer be accessible to anyone! Or just anonymized so you don't know who it belongs to anymore. In the future there would be no more phone jokers and no more hints in the (non-public) logs. Cool yeah!

Quite insane, isn't it? After all, that's exactly the part of the game.

I am fighting against this absolutely mindless implementation of data protection regulations. This was never in the spirit of the legislator! That is why no European court will deal with such kind of "violations".

  14. I was shocked when I read today that Cachly has also removed the Friends feature!

Above all, I do not understand why this violates the GDPR?
1.) The cachers who were affected accepted all my friendship requests. So they all agreed to let me see their "data".
2.) Even then, each one can block the API access to the public profile data in its profile.
3.) All the data you see in Cachly can also be accessed normally via a user's public profile (even if they are not "friends").

So why does Cachly have to block this function under the excuse of the Data Protection Regulation?

And where exactly is the data protection regulation violated in this case? If that were the case Groundspeak would have to take all log entries off the net immediately and no user profile would be public anymore. Also Groundspeak should no longer show which friends logged which caches in the dashboard. Please explain why this step became necessary!

Maybe instead of hiding maps, if there was a list of the last 5 recent used at the top, I'd suspect that is what would get constantly used. You'd only need to scroll down past downloaded/recent if it's a new map you are selecting you haven't recently selected.

I'd prefer a recent section considered vs hiding sections.

I would prefer to hide the unnecessary maps or better: a reorder function!

Showing the last 5 recent used maps changes the order each time. A fixed order makes it easier.
